The 7 women to pass the 10,000 WTA Ranking points milestone: Iga Swiatek No 2 for most points

Reigning world No 1 Swiatek joined the 11,000-mile club in May 2024 as she reached a career-best tally for points, but she still has some way to go to break 23-time Grand Slam winner Williams’ all-time record.

Tennis greats Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert miss out as the WTA only adopted the current points system in 2009.

There is no doubt the trio would have broken the 10,000-point milestone as Graf spent an incredible 377 weeks at No 1, which was a record in both the men’s and women’s game until Novak Djokovic broke it in 2023 while Navratilova topped the rankings for 332 weeks and Evert 260 weeks.

The 7 women to pass 10,000 WTA Ranking points since 2009:

7. Ashleigh Barty – 10,185 (August 23, 2021)

Ashleigh Barty retired at a career-high No 1 as the Australian decided to call it a day shortly after lifting the Australian Open trophy in 2022.

Barty had just under 8,000 points when she retired and she achieved her highest-ever points tally in 2021, shortly after she won Wimbledon.

The Australian won Wimbledon, the Miami Open, the Cincinnati Open, the Stuttgart Open and the Yarra Valley Classic that year to become only the sixth player to reach the milestone at the time.

6. Caroline Wozniacki – 10,255 (May 23, 2011)

Great Dane Caroline Wozniacki first climbed to the top of the WTA Rankings in October 2010 and seven months later she hit the 10,000-mile club.

The Dane finished runner-up at the 2010 WTA Finals and reached the semi-finals of the US Open (2010) and Australian Open (2011) while she won titles at the Dubai Championships, Indian Wells Open, Charlestone Open and Brussels Open.

5. Dinara Safina – 10,521 (July 6, 2009)

Dinara Safina is one of three world No 1s to top the rankings without winning a Grand Slam, the other two being Jelena Jankovic and Karolina Pliskova.

The Russian finished runner-up at the Australian Open and French Open and made it to the semi-final at Wimbledon while she won titles at the Madrid Open and the Italian Open.

4. Maria Sharapova – 10,690 (May 13, 2013)

Maria Sharapova also broke the 10,000-point barrier in 2012, but it was in 2013 that she reached her highest points tally. The 2013 season was a vintage one for the 10,000 club as Sharapova was actually ranked No 2 in the world at the time.

Sharapova was the defending French Open and Italian Open champion as she won the titles in 2012 while she finished runner-up at the WTA Finals.

She started 2013 with trophies at the Indian Wells Open and Stuttgart Open as well as finishing runner-up at the 2013 Miami Open and Madrid Open.

3. Victoria Azarenka – 10,955 (October 8, 2012)

Victoria Azarenka joined Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams in the 10,000-point club in 2013, but it was in 2012 that the Belarusian achieved her best points tally.

The former world No 1 lifted trophies at the Australian Open, Sydney International, Qatar Open, Indian Wells Open and China Open while she also had runners-up points from the WTA Finals (2012) and US Open (2013).

2. Iga Swiatek – 11,695 (20 May 2024)

Iga Swiatek first broke through the 10,000-point barrier after winning the 2022 US Open and in November she hit 11,000 points for the first time.

But it was in May 2024 that she achieved her best-ever points tally of 11,695.

Swiatek was the defending French Open champion, WTA Finals and China Open champion having won those titles in 2023 while she also lifted the Qatar Open, Indian Wells Open, Madrid Open and Italian Open titles during the first half of the 2024 season.

1. Serena Williams – 13,615 (10 June 2013)

Serena Williams is her only exclusive 13,000-point club with the best-ever points tally coming during the 2013 campaign.

The tennis great won Wimbledon, the US Open, the WTA Finals, the Canadian Open and the China Open the previous year and went on to beat Maria Sharapova in the 2013 French Open final to go past 13,000 points.

She also had points from the 2013 Miami Open, Madrid Open, Italian Open, Brisbane International and Charleston Open.
