Novak Djokovic Finds His Match on the WTA Tour in Iga Swiatek as Rare Praise Comes Her Way From Aussie Tennis Legend

Clay courts have always been the platform for the most balletic display of athleticism and tactics. And according to the former tennis pro, Wally MasurIga Swiatek has personified this notion most effectively. Giving an analysis behind his comment, he explained why she reminded him of Novak Djokovic on tour.

The Madrid Open winner, Iga Swiatek, has gracefully conquered the red clay court with her prowess. The hangover of the epic final battle between her and the World No. 2, Aryna Sabalenka, is still fresh on everyone’s mind. Wally Masur is also one of them. In his latest podcast interview, he said, “I would lean towards Swiatek just because of her movement. I mean, it’s unbelievable.”

The former World No. 15 went on to compare her flexibility on-court with that of the Serbian legend, Novak Djokovic, and said, “She’s now the Djokovic on the female tour in terms of movement on clay. And that’s important.” As referred by Masur, Novak Djokovic’s success on clay is nothing short of glory, with a total of 19 titles on clay.

And Swiatek, who has so far achieved eight clay court titles at the age of just 22, also shows great promise for the future. Not only that, but she has won three French Open titles, just like Novak Djokovic himself!

However, Masur also pointed out how it is only a “fine line” that separates her incredible prowess on court with that of players like Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. Addressing Swiatek, he further said, “She’s the best mover on clay, no doubt about it, but they are so close they are all playing so well.”

Sabalenka, currently ranked No. 1, has also made her unique mark at the clay court, with already two Madrid Open titles to her name. And not to forget Elena Rybakina as well, who is also not far behind. With three clay court titles, she has also given her best performance on clay so far. But the queen of clay still remains the same, Iga Swiatek. However, just like Masur, Djokovic has also praised her “fighting spirit” on court.

Novak Djokovic on how Iga Swiatek “has been dominating the women’s game”

When Iga Swiatek was competing in the U.S. Open last year, she was in her best form, like always. After her second round win against Daria Saville, she received a compliment from World No. 1, Novak Djokovic. “Well, Iga has been dominating the women’s game last couple of years, multiple Grand Slam winner.

He continued and added, “I love her, you know, devotion, dedication. Also, you know, maybe she’s too humble to say, too modest to say, but she’s got a great fighting spirit, no doubt.” Djokovic further addressed Swiatek as a “warrior” and appreciated her for taking every single point and game on the court. Then he said, “I really like that kind of champion spirit and mindset.” And as Iga Swiatek moves forward in the clay season this year, fans will surely be captivated to watch her climb up the ladder of success even more.
