Becoming the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam singles title at 19, Iga Swiatek was just beginning her journey to becoming the World No. 1 when she took home the 2020 French Open. Winning the title again in 2022 and 2023, and also claiming the 2022 US Open, Swiatek has claimed the top spot for more than 90 weeks as the World No. 1 in women’s singles. She is also the first Polish player, male or female, to reach the top ranking in singles.
Having lifted 18 singles titles in her career so far, the 22-year-old is on a warpath to victory. A proponent of equal pay for men and women in sports, Iga Swiatek is leading the charge to bridge the pay gap in tennis.
Although she could not go too far in this year’s Australian Open, she won the Indian Wells Masters in March after defeating Maria Sakkari in straight sets. Previously, she also won the Qatar Open. With her second title win this season, Swiatek looks stronger than ever to clinch another Grand Slam title soon.
Iga Swiatek’s Early Life
Iga Swiatek was born on May 31, 2001, in Warsaw, Poland, to Dorota and Tomasz Swiatek. Her father was a rower who competed in the men’s quadruple sculls event at the 1988 Olympics held in Seoul. Her mother works as an orthodontist. She has a sister, Agata, who is three years older than her and works as a dentist.
Swiatek’s father wanted his daughters to be competitive athletes. He preferred that they participate in individual sports rather than team sports, reasoning that they could have more influence over their chances of success. Agata started out as a swimmer but shifted to tennis due to difficulties with swimming. Iga followed in her sister’s footsteps and started playing tennis as well. After all, what younger sibling doesn’t want to emulate the older?

Iga Swiatek’s Career
At the 2019 French Open, Swiatek reached the 4th round, stunning the 16th seed Wang Qiang in the 2nd round. In 2020, Swiatek reached the 4th round of the Australian Open and the 3rd round of the US Open before making a big breakthrough at the French Open 2020, where she won her first Grand Slam title. The French Open breakthrough was massive as the 19-year-old won the tournament without dropping a single set and lost just 28 games all tournament. She defeated players like Simona Halep and Sofia Kenin on her way to the title.
The 2022 season saw Swiatek taking massive strides toward greatness, as she won 6 consecutive titles on the tour, including the French Open title, which was her second Grand Slam title. Moreover, she also won the ‘Sunshine Double’. Apart from that, the Polish sensation had a record 37-match unbeaten streak, which was broken by Alize Cornet at the Wimbledon Championships.
Following her Wimbledon defeat, Swiatek went headstrong into the US Open and played to win, demolishing everyone in her path to win her first US Open and the third slam of her career, sustaining her place at number 1.
Coming into 2023, Swiatek reached her 40th consecutive week at number 1. Coming into the Australian Open, she did not fare well, as she was out by round four. Following the slam, the Polish player performed to the best of her abilities to reach two Masters finals. French Open would prove to be her best once again as she went on to the final and won against Karolina Muchova in three sets.

Wimbledon would be difficult for her once again as she left the championships in the quarterfinal. 2024 did not begin well for Swiatek after she made a shocking third-round exit at the Australian Open, but she reclaimed her status by lifting the 18th singles title with a third consecutive Qatar crown.

Iga Swiatek’s Records
At 22, Iga Swiatek is the first Polish player, male or female, to rise to glory in singles the way she has. With 4 Grand Slams already to her name, she had the longest winning streak in 2022 with 37 matches in a row from February until July. It was the first time in 25 years for a WTA player to claim that record, and Iga Swiatek has not stopped.

Iga Swiatek’s sports psychologist?
Shining on the court is not the thing Iga Swiatek does. Taking benefit from the growing mental health support, Swiatek has also added a sports psychologist to her coaching team. Iga Swiatek and Daria Abramowicz have been together since 2019 when the Pole was only 17 and rated just outside the top 150 of the WTA. Although the two have maintained their partnership, their relationship sometimes comes off as a bit strange to some fans.
An interaction on the Netflix series Break Point showed the two talking during a haircut appointment. Abramowicz said that her hair needs to be long enough to be tied up, but Swiatek wanted a haircut of her own choice and went against her psychologist. The interaction and moment raised quite a few eyebrows, all in good fun!
Iga Swiatek: Coaching staff
Micha Kaznowski was Swiatek’s primary coach in her early junior years, and she worked with him until the 2016 French Open. Jolanta Rusin-Krzepota was her physical preparation trainer for over four years, from the end of the 2014 US Open until the end of the 2019 US Open. Piotr Sierzputowski began coaching her in 2016.
While Sierzputowski was her coach, Nick Brown, a British former professional tennis player, and former Polish Davis Cup coach, served as a primary adviser on occasion. After nearly six years of collaboration, Swiatek announced her separation from Sierzputowski in December 2021. Tomasz Wiktorowski, who formerly coached Agnieszka Radwanska, is her current coach.
Iga Swiatek’s Charity work
A true philanthrope off the court, Iga Swiatek never misses an opportunity to give back to the community. In November 2023, her racket used during the French Open final to beat Karolina Muchova was auctioned for charity. Ultimately sold for around $63k, it was reported that all of the funds would go to charities fighting to raise awareness of road accidents involving children.
With her open fight for mental health support, Swiatek has also been donating to organizations that combat stigma against the same. “Each year around World Mental Health Day I have a special time when I stop for a moment and appreciate all the work on myself I do everyday as a person and as a tennis player,” Swiatek said last year.
