The last few weeks have undoubtedly belonged to Aryna Sabalenka. First, the tennis player from Minsk won the WTA 1000 competition in Cincinnati, and now she has added the US Open title to that. The Belarusian has strengthened her second position in the WTA ranking and, at the same time, has reduced the gap to Iga Świątek.
But Sabalenka also improved her position in the WTA Race ranking. The 2,000 points she gained for her success in New York allowed her to make up a lot of ground on Świątek, who was eliminated in the quarterfinals at the US Open 2024. The Pole won 430 points at the US International Championships.
Thus, in the WTA Race ranking, Świątek’s advantage over Sabalenka has shrunk to 409 points. This means an interesting fight for the first position at the end of the 2024 season. In the coming weeks, the tennis players will compete in Asia, where, among other things, WTA 1000 tournaments are scheduled in Beijing and Wuhan. So there are still a lot of points to be won.
The WTA Race classification is important because it is based on which tennis players qualify for the WTA Finals. These will take place this year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 2-9. The Pole and the Belarusian are already certain to play in the WTA Championships.
The top eight singles players and top eight doubles pairs of the 2024 season will advance to the WTA Finals. A maximum of 1,500 points will be up for grabs in Riyadh.
